Ecka Mordecai is a London-based British artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans the realms of sound, performance and smell. Her artwork centers on an exploration of sensation, interweaving elements as diverse as cello, horsehair harp, vocals, egg flute, scent and improvisation. Through these various mediums, she creates temporal objects that evoke emotional complexity and engage the senses.
A former member of a Renaissance youth group, Mordecai works in a range of styles from concrete music to improvisation and performance art. Mordecai’s artistic approach is both intimate and rigorous as she breaks down formal constraints and boundaries in the process. A notable aspect of her practice involves using fragrance as a tool to craft unique soundscapes. This unconventional approach demonstrates her willingness to experiment with different sensory experiences and break with traditional artistic norms.
Her practice is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary art and the endless possibilities that arise when boundaries are pushed and artistic mediums converge.
Music review:
From her music, I feel that sound is a dynamic and a state, which can set a scene and provide the audience with an atmosphere. Her music also sets up a channel, allowing the listener to explore and explore the inner world; in this progress, time seems to be less important.
Recorded on her cello, horsehair harp and fields sound, her technique is extraordinary, but even better is her storytelling. She seems to use the cello to clear the listener of distractions before deciding to create scenes for the listener with the leaps of the lute – exceptional situational recreations. The violin and cello complement each other, corresponding to the high and low voices, as if the scene is transformed and upgraded in three-dimensionality. From her music I feel that sound is a dynamic, a state of being, which sets a scene and provides the audience with an atmosphere she wants to convey. Her music also sets up a channel for the listener to explore and discover the inner world; in the process, time seems less important.
