CISA–Fixed vs. Interactive – Artist & Audience

I think I am wondering on how to put efforts on our monologue “life flash” in audience interaction. As we are gonna have our show this weekend!!! I printed out 14 poems in diverse languages which was being selected and read in the whole sound track. I put them into roles in the glasses with a spinners each. I thought it would be a nice prop when we used it in the end of the monologue. (As we decided to make the audience spinning with us. From the sound aspect, because the last part consists of voices in extremely low frequency so when the actress is improvising her monologue lines, he voice could be hearing.)

• “The notion of intra-action (in contrast to the usual “interaction,”
which presumes the prior existence of independent entities/relata)
represents a profound conceptual shift. It is through specific agential
intra-actions that the boundaries and properties of the “components”
of phenomena become determinate and that particular embodied
concepts become meaningful.” (Barad, 2003, p815)

Presenting works by emerging sound artists from around the world. The Engine Room is a Morley College London initiative, continuing Morley’s legacy as a leading center for electronic and experimental music and sound art.
A platform for the exploration, education and promotion of experimental sound and music, The Engine Room aims to engage with students and both emerging and established artists to encourage and promote new work.

I went to the engine room exhibition mainly for inspiration for my own exhibition “polyphonic”. I think mainly for sound artists, we use headphones/microphones/speakers as hard devices to make interaction to the audience. It is very funny that I sometimes found a lot of sound artists like scientists instead of fine artists. There are two works I like the best and would like to share:

Ville Aalto Finland–Noise Cancellation

It layers different colours of noise with synthetic versions of weather phenomena, traffic sounds, animals , machinery etc. The end result is a field recording-esque collage of artificial environments. It draws audience attention on what we receive on sounds in our daily life. I think It does lose some bits of controls as some of the real noises in traffic are very intense and harsh, but making the whole piece more intriguing.

La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela – Dream House “Sound and Light”

I feel like the colour and the set up of it makes sense to the topic. The mixture of the light, lying experience and the sound correlates so well together.

When a continuous frequency is sounded in an
enclosed space such as a room, the air in the room is
arranged into high and low pressure areas. In the high
pressure areas the sound is louder, and in the low pressure
areas the sound is softer. Since a sine wave has only one
frequency component, the pattern of high and low
pressure areas is easy to locate in space.

“Sound and Light Environment”
From original installation-performance concept:
“A continuous frequency environment in sound and light
with singing from time to time.”
“By 1962 La Monte had formulated the concept of a
Dream House in which a work would be
played continuously and ultimately exist in time as a
“living organism with a life and tradition of its own..””
